This fast paced police procedural, featuring DS Lucy Black, reflects the complexities, tensions and antagonisms that evidently bedevil Northern Ireland and the city of Derry. The story starts with DS Fleming attending services at his church where the guest pastor harangues about homosexuals and their "agenda". This introduction is quickly followed by Fleming and his partner DS Lucy Black being called in to interview a Romanian family whose home has been painted with unwelcoming graffiti. The action quickly expands to include a particular violent murder of a young gay man, drugs at a local bar, the shooting of an older "community leader" (as in holdover from the time of the Troubles) agitation of a neighborhood against immigrants, more murders, more agitation by the gay bashing minister. The police at first think they are dealing with separate crimes and even the reader begins to wonder just what the major problem is: the reaction against gays? drugs, anti-immigration? or a turf war between the aging community leaders and young Turks who want to take over? And is there a dirty cop involved somehow? All this occurs in the few days leading up to the Brexit vote. The culmination is a nerve wracking experience for Lucy. There is also a bit of ugly business involving colleagues within the police. The crimes are ultimately solved but, of course, the underlying tensions and social problems continue. No happy endings here. The problems seem to be realistic ones, with the experience of the years of the Troubles still unforgotten. Unfortunately, the problems in Northern Ireland resonate with situations in the US. The Irish accent is not on paper but the written words of some of the characters, especially the self righteous pastor, could well be said by their American counterparts. This is a well-written, action-packed page turner. I can't say it's exactly an enjoyable book to read but it's certainly a thought-provoking one. I look forward to the next book featuring the intelligent and admirable Lucy.Product details

I have enjoyed this series but this entry features stereotypical characters and a tired plot. I'm disappointed. Maybe next time.
Superbly written novel by the best writer in Northern Ireland. I prefer the Inspector Devlin series but Lucy Black is a welcome addition to his amazing band of characters.
I really liked the other books from the series, but this one I had difficulty paying attention to. For me, there were just too many characters to keep up with.If this were the first book in the series, I would have not read any others.
3.5 stars. I was a bit disappointed in this book. It had less of the local flavor than the previous books in this series. Many aspects of the story could have taken place anywhere in Northern Ireland and to a lesser extent elsewhere in the UK or beyond.
I enjoy reading reading crime thriller's, every once in a while. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book
(hence the rating). As a teenager, I read Shell Scott, a private investigator, crime novel. Alvis
I actually liked it more than three stars. I was a bit unsure in the middle; I felt I didn't know Lucy and I began to get a bit bored with the story. It was probably my own fault as this is the first Lucy Black book I have read and it is the 3rd or 4th in the series. However, I kept going and I thoroughly enjoyed the latter part of the book. I have downloaded another one. I must check the order of the books and read the first one.
There are only 3 book series that I instantly pre-order when it becomes available, and McGilloway's Lucy Black series is one of them. Well, maybe 4, because I'd also pre-order his Devlin series if a book were on the horizon.
Others have explained the plot, so I won't repeat it. Overall, this is a solid police procedural with well-developed characters. The plot is convincingly realistic, with several things going on at once, and it makes you wonder how and if they are inter-connected.
In my opinion, these books should be viewed less as 'police procedural' and more as solid 'literary fiction' where the main character just happens to be police. The real strength of this series is Lucy herself and her relationship not only with her past, but her present, her understanding it, making peace with it, and moving on. She is a cop who sometimes goes off half-cocked, but, more than that, she is a real character. The change in Lucy over 4 books is fascinating, realistic, and compelling.
My only complaint is that McGilloway doesn't write them fast enough, or make them long enough. I could easily savor a 600 page Lucy Black novel. I love these books.
Oh, yeah, I also wish they put page numbers on the editions instead of just locations. So, drop .00001 star?
