As printers Bruno Gmünder is very high-end. Paper is very heavy, able to take a lot of use. The ink has an odor, but is much softer and nicer than most soy inks in use today, some of which make me want to keep the book outside! Colors tend to be muted and soft, tending towards an overall darkness, not entirely in keeping with the text. The red of the British flag looks more orange than red. The main problem with this publisher is not printing, it's binding. The spline was somewhat unstable when the book (soft cover) was new and showed definite separation on the second reading. I expect to see page separation by the fourth reading unless I rebind the book before then, something that shouldn't be a problem in a books first hundred readings, minimum. The story line is old, and perhaps a bit trite, and presented with sort of a dull, disinterested aloofness not in keeping with the story. I found myself constantly wanting to add material to the story, as presented, to give it some scope, immediacy completion. The elements of a good story were there, in a disjointed, noncontiguous sort of a way. The author/illustrator never, in my opinion, gave the actual story a chance.
That said The artwork was, as stand-alone elements, very well done in many respects. I'd really like to see the complete story instead of vignettes of the story.
The sad part is that this is very noticeably an attempt at high-end publishing that has largely failed because the binding falls apart so very quickly. Any attempt to open the pages fully for reading results in destruction of the fabric of the book. This seems to be a continuing problem (see my review of "Bike Boy Rides Again).
Added 20Mar2015: Upon 2nd reading Pages started coming loose. This is unacceptable in a book is expensive. I changed the raring to one star only because this review becomes hidden if I rate this at 0 stars. The new title probably ought to be, "Well Printed Junk!"

Nicely done.
This is a very hot and sexual graphic novel. The drawings are very explicit yet tasteful.
A negative I found is in the beginning it starts off with a few rape scenes, which I found to be a turn-off. But once I got past those pages it was great.
Most definately NOT a graphic novel for kids. Very adult in theme and content. A spin on the damsel in distress/wicked pirate theme except the damsel is a British Naval Officer who becomes first Wade's prisoner and then his lover. There is betrayal and redemption. The art is well done. Very sensual.
When I first decided to review Black Wade for M/M Romance Month, I thought, "ha - a graphic novel - easy!" I could not have been more wrong!
Where do I begin? I should say first that if you're not a fan of the "rape turns to love" storyline you won't like this book. The actual story itself is short - Lieutenant Jack Wilkins is captured at sea by the infamous pirate, Black Wade. Black Wade has certain well-known "preferences" as far as his sexual partners go, and he rapes Jack. From the excellent illustrations we already know Jack has thoughts of manlove, and although he doesn't acknowledge it yet, he likes Black Wade's "visits". As they develop feelings for each other, the crew grows restless and Black Wade must set Jack adrift at sea to prove his ruthlessness. Jack manages to get home to England and his fiancee, but he can't stop thinking about Black Wade. When the English capture Black Wade, Jack must make a choice...
As I mention above, the story is short, but the illustrations are fabulous. You can't get the story without admiring the fantastic artwork that accompanies it. For a vanilla housewife like me - is it naughty? Yes. Did I hide it from hubs and kids? Yes. Did I love it? Yes!!
I must confess this is the first graphic novel I've read. Black Wade gives a whole new meaning (to me at least) to the term "Graphic Novel"!
The print and drawing is topnotch. However, it could be even better if the book is a bit thicker !!!! Also , if the skin texture looks a bit rougher, that will make it more amazing.
This was a good comic, but way to short. Hopefully they will do another one at some point and have more action (not the kind as you would think ha). As much as I liked the book, you can see in parts where they went for the obvious and could have done better job on the story and with some of the charecters. Over all I would reccomend this if you can get it for like under 10/15 bucks that would be great. I do think it was over priced for the length of it, although it is put together nice and hard cover.
It's hot, the artwork is gorgeous, but the writing is kinda weak. I understand that a liberal suspension of disbelief is required for something like this, but you ruin it by making mistakes like putting a mast on the jib boom and not naming the colony where a lot of the action takes place. Nonetheless, the hopeless romantic in me will be spending more time with these boys.
The binding is not the best. The cover has already begun to separate from the pages, and I've only just read thru it once.
