Cid Wymann's mother died during his birth, and his presence reminds his drunken father of that loss on a daily basis. This fact earns Cid frequent beatings, which his grandmother can do little to stop. But two things are his salvation. He makes two friends, Siggy and Tomik Kopecky, who help him battle the neighborhood bullies. He discovers his grandmother is not attending church services but really is going to the movies, a world Cid comes to revere as he is weekly thrilled by scenes in Captain Blood and other Erroll Flynn movies about swordplay duels. Cid yearns to learn to be a fencer and an actor but does'nt believe those dreams lie in the realm of possiblities. He is to be quite surprised!Abandoned by his father and losing his grandmother eventually by death, Cid is now a homeless child with no known relatives. Siggy's mom and dad take him in for a while but are forced to find a relative as they have to move themselves during this period of economic decline and loss of jobs in early 20th Century New York. So begins an amazing adventure as Cid lives with Lefty, a distant cousin who was gassed in WWI and lost his left arm and leg as well. His passion was honoring the secret love he held for Cid's mother and acting. Cid now becomes the student of that latter passion, reading all of Shakespeare's plays and imagining the duels therein each play. Lefty teaches Cid to fight and his fencing lessons then begin with Lefty's friend, Nikolai Varvarinski, who is teaching him to fight for fighting's sake and not just for acting. The scenes of this very tough training are exhilarating, and the readers senses a huge battle coming!
Finally, the old bullies reappear surprisingly in an older, more sophisticated venue, and they are out for Cid, this time with death-dealing intentions. The remainder of the novel leads up to a climax in which victory, honor, and integrity fill the pages of this story for all involved, with some head-splitting, hair-raising battles added to spice the mix!
Open Wounds is well-written, plot-driven, with cultural additions about movies, plays, and The Great War, elements that combine to make this a phenomenal piece of historical fiction! Superbly done!

Open Wounds Joseph Lunievicz Books Reviews
A brilliant debut novel by Lunievicz. An exhilarating look at old New York, some truly unforgettable characters, and who knew fencing could be so intriguing. Bravo, Joseph Lunievicz.
THIS BOOK IS ENTERTAINING, TOUCHING AND JUST A WONDERFUL READING EXPERIENCE. I AM NOT A YOUNG READER. I HAVE BEEN READING FOR AT LEAST 66 OR 67 YEARS OF MY 71 YEARS. THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR JUST YOUNG PEOPLE, BUT FOR ALL AGES. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SEE MORE OF CID AS HE GROWS AND MATURES.
THERE IS SO MUCH JUNK AVAILABLE TODAY, THAT IT IS REFRESHING TO SEE A BOOK OF SUCH QUALITY. IT WOULD ALSO MAKE A GREAT MOVIE.
I have to admit that I wasn't sure what to expect about this book despite it's good reviews, mainly because I'm an absolute ignorant about the fencing or theater world which seems prevalent in both the description and reviews of it. But after starting reading the first few pages I was completely hooked. I found the story of little Cyd extremely compelling, sad and sweet at the same time.
I did get teary eyed in more than one occasion, is definitely the kind of book that will touch some cords inside you, and the fact that it does it with a subject so unfamiliar as fencing (at least for most people) pays tribute to the author's brilliancy.
Couldn't put down the book until I finished it, left me such an uplifting feeling when I did. Cyd's story will stay with me for a long time.
I can only say BRAVO and again BRAVO. What an enjoyable read. Lunievicz's writing is very articulate without slipping into ego-inflating or self-satisfied flourishes. Just the facts with efficient language that lets the characters breathe and enough descriptive detail to evoke early twentieth century Queens and Manhattan. The author did his homework and turned it into art. The storytelling flows so believably that I wondered if family history inspired him.
Lunievicz's ability to take an unpopular sport - fencing - and breathe great humanity into it astounds me. I probably would not finish a fencing novel if the author had not made his protagonist's need to fence so convincing. He trusted his instructors even though both were flawed like his father. The sport propelled him into manhood.
I was very moved by the protagonist's ability to maintain childhood friendships and respect for imperfect role models. The resolution to his longing for a maternal connection is very gratifying and the promise of a future with his love interest makes me long for a sequel.
